  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working on numerous tasks that vary from day-to-day and range from small, simple tasks that occur on projects that just need slight work on them to tasks that run over several weeks which is are significant and are big parts of the project you're working on. You have responsibility for taking account of the hours you do on each project. You have daily interactions with people all throughout the company.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learnt a lot of new skills. The software was completely new to me when beginning so I developed a lot of skills in relation to Revit and Civil 3D. I also developed skills like confidence, communication and taking responsibility as you're constantly working with new people.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme because new projects and new tasks are always coming in and are never the same. The workload varies in amount and the actual idea of the tasks which helps not make the job boring or go slow.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is structured well. I receive lots of help from my employer and there is a clear pathway to improving and achieving goals to become higher within the organisation. The college side of the apprenticeship is not structured and organised well at all. This might just be my college - but, I've had at least 5 tutors since September, exams cancelled because we haven't been taught enough and well enough, and nothing is all that clear with what is going on.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my employer - always asking how college is going and advising what I should do if something is not going the right way. Also, within the workplace, all tasks are new to me so I have little understanding before starting them and receive lots of support with gaining a quick and good understanding of what is required.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Over time, the amount of support I have received has increased a lot with new tutors providing more and more support once understanding what position we are in. In general, the support isn't ideal as nothing is too clear on what is going on. However, this may just be due to my college and not apprenticeships in general.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification supports me well but not to what I expected. In the first year it is very broad and covers a lot of topics as other job roles such as quantity surveyors and building surveyors are in my class. However, the second year is much more specific which will provide a lot more support.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At MM, we have lots of extra-curricular activities. There lots of sports teams/events that happen after work such as a 5-a-side football team one evening, and some divisions often do activities after work - for example, my team did volleyball one evening. Especially in my team, we have lots of social activities like going for team dinners, all going to lunch together and having big lunches when there are new starters.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
  • I would say be open to trying anything because there are many, many job roles and divisions within the business so you may start off in one division or team and work on something else whilst within that team and enjoy more.
