Daily stand up meetings every morning where we discuss the performance of the previous day and issues we need to look into. Along with this, we will do a deep dive into a project to benefit the company financially such as improving line yield or speed of work.
My confidence has been enhanced in a way in which I don’t think any role would have. You feel important and deliver findings of projects to managers which definitely helps confidence and communication skills. My problem solving skills have developed massively learning new techniques to identify the root cause.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my programme. They were very welcoming and the workforce are very easy to get a long with. I enjoyed being given tasks and having a go at them myself, and if stuck then my mentor could help assist and show me what to do.
The programme was well structured. Upon joining I was taught the basics and the fundamental softwares used within the company and how they relate to the work we do. I was assigned a project straight away and was shadowed when doing so aswell as given a template to follow.
When I require support there are plenty of people I can contact. Whether it be my mentor, the manager of the area I’m in or even the works technical manager, each will make time for me and give me advice when ever I required it.
I have monthly catchup meetings with my works liaison officer where we discuss my attendance, the current modules I’m completed and any previous/upcoming exams and assignments. They are always checking on my wellbeing and ensuring I am comfortable in the work I’m completing and praise my results.
The course I am completing helps my understand my role better as it gives me a greater understanding of the chemistry behind the steel making process. This helps me make decisions in daily tasks and identify projects to develop the companies performance in different steel products that we make.
In work there is an organisation called magnet which will allow trips that are covered for us, the most recent being snowdon. There are also lunchtime meetings for apprentices through magnet which is nice to meet other apprentices across the company. In my department we also have a work meet up.

Because as an apprentice you don’t feel overwhelmed or under appreciated. You are given difficult tasks which challenge you and help develop problem solving skills and adaptability in various scenarios. I have enjoyed coming to work and it hasn’t been something I dread or am nervous to attend.
