As a Cost Engineer my role is to work with the Buyer and Engineer to give a 'value for money' service. This usually means being given either a physical part or some CAD data from which a cost estimate must be produced. This is done by assessing raw material and processes involved to formulate the product. The cost estimate is then compared against the price which has been quoted.
I am currently studying for a foundation degree at Warwickshire College with progression on to a full degree in September at Warwick University. Within the workplace I have completed a several training courses since joining the office full time. These have helped to develop skills which I felt were weaker to become a more rounded individual. I have also completed a Cranfield University cost course to gain a better understanding of how cost is formulated.
The day to day work can sometimes be repetitive, but the chance to learn about lots of different manufacturing processes is interesting. The Cost Engineering team is friendly and their is generally a positive atmosphere present throughout Jaguar Land Rover
It is often said that we are 'the future of the company' and we are treated as such. We are rarely given meaningless tasks with no value and always given the chance to learn when possible. Recognition is always given when deserved.
Each apprentice in Cost Engineering has a personal plan which has a clear path planned out for the six years of the apprenticeship. This includes rotation around every department within our area of the business.
Warwickshire College provides all the resources needed to complete our training however it is often upon ourselves to do the work with little support or guidance.
Within the workplace we are given all the support required to complete any task. Whether it being college work or help with Cost Engineering related work. This is true for both senior managers and the Cost Engineerinig team.
The salary package for the Higher Apprenticeship at JLR is very generous and will more than allow for any living, travelling and social costs along with the opportunity to save.
There are plenty of company events and activities that take place outside of work for recreation and also the chance to do community events. There is also £250 reserved for each employee to complete almost any activity of their own choosing in their own time.

I feel like a well valued member of the team and I am also paid very generously. But most importantly I feel like I will be allowed to pursue a rewarding career if I am willing to work hard for it.
The application process is very competitive with several assessment days likely. There are usually tasks which you will intentionally know very little about but it is your communication skills which are being monitored more. Therefore my main advice is ensure that you do have input on these tasks.
