I assist/shadow the lead QS in his day to day duties. I assist in procurement and in meetings, and remeasure works. On payment week I deal with the applications and payments for the small/medium packages, to assess with the lead QS.
I have learnt a great deal about the commercial side of building projects. I have become more proficient in Excel and using bespoke software such as Oracle. I have become more confident in my communication skills in meetings.
I enjoy it a lot. Every day I progress my skills further and I really enjoy working with the site team. I feel that I am a valued member of my business unit.
I am aware it is a 5 year programme with 2 years Level 4 and 3 years level 5/6. I have regular meetings with my line manager and workplace mentor so I know if I am on track or if there is something I need to develop.
I work with my workplace mentor, if there is anything I am unsure about he is able to answer. I am given the opportunity to work independently, and I go through what I have produced to ensure that it is correct with the project QS.
After the 1st block week, I was invited to join a teams call to answer any questions or concerns I have before the assessment submission deadline. I feel that in the small group the lecturers are able to help us well.
The qualification is highly tailored towards my job role. The Maths and Commercial Studies is invaluable to my work, such as using rates and volume calculations. I am able to bring extra knowledge to my job role that I would have not learned elsewhere.
There is sports teams and time out events. Our project team go to the pub after work now and then.
