My role currently is as a student learning in college so day-to-day involves either time in the workshop creating test jobs (machining or by hand) or in the classroom doing theoretical work (health and safety/maths/engineering materials studies)
I have both developed existing skills (such as hand skills from D&T courses in secondary) as well as developed new skills like with machining.
Very much
It is well organised with all work we need to complete scheduled/planned to be completed by certain checkpoints across the year. We have tests/reviews to examine our progress as well regularly.
We receive a lot of support and training from our employer.
I feel that much of what I am learning will be invaluable in my future role. Even if I do not use certain parts of my training every day or ever again I feel that it will make me a better engineer and give a better understanding of what’s needed.
There are many clubs/groups hosted at city college which we can join and participate in. Our employer also sponsors many events and activities in the local area which we are encouraged to participate in.
Yes
Babcock is a great and supportive training provider especially for apprentices. They also offer many exciting future roles within the company after finishing our apprenticeships and put a lot of time and effort into extra training such as visits to the site and well-being support.
Make sure you are willing to learn and put in the effort and you will go far. As long as you want to be there you will learn invaluable lessons which can help you in further roles.
