  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Support the HR department running the end to end recruitment process. Participate in payroll activities such as changing employees pay and issuing contracts. I also have the opportunity to take part in many different areas of HR and recruitment, the variety is the main thing I love about this apprenticeship.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Communication and confidence are the areas I have noticed the biggest improvement in myself. I speak to people of all different seniority levels across the University and assist them on their recruitments with confidence. Since the start my manager has pushed me out of my comfort zone and supported me in all the skills I wanted to improve and develop.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my first apprenticeship, so much so that I am now studying my second apprenticeship at Oxford University. I started with an admin apprenticeship and I have now moved on to study CIPD which is specifically HR focused. I find it really interesting and it has been great to meet so many other like minded people whilst attending college.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised and structures. We were given a timetable at our first session so we know what we are studying each week. The timetable also has the assignment deadlines on, so I am able to plan my workload in advance to make sure I have time to reach the deadlines. My college tutor is also really support and offers help whenever needed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Oxford University gives me all the support I need to complete and achieve good results in my apprenticeship. They also offer a buddy scheme which is great as they pair you up with other employees that have completed the course that you are currently studying. I have found this really helpful, especially when I first started writing assignments.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider also offers support throughout the apprenticeship and I catch up with them every 12 weeks to make sure I am on target and completing everything on time. The training provider also regularly speaks to my tutor to check on me and if the tutor flagged anything then the training provider would be in contact more regularly with additional support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It has given me an insight into HR legislations and policies and it has given me the confidence to challenge and respond to questions or queries that we receive working in HR. It also has increased my knowledge in all areas of HR so has opened many doors for the future!

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there are so many opportunities to socialise at Oxford University. The apprenticeships team has set up an apprenticeship network, apprenticeship social and also a buddy scheme. All of these are great ways to get to know other apprentices working at the University. We are able to attend lots of professional networking events with other HR staff across the wider University.

  • 9a. Would you recommend University of Oxford to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They have been extremely supportive from the start. They also kept me on after my first apprenticeship as a permanent employee but have sponsored me to do my second apprenticeship as well. As it is such a large organisation there are so many opportunities to move around and explore different career paths.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to University of Oxford?
  • Create a strong supporting statement and mention all the criteria from the job description in this. If you are invited to interview, make sure you research about the University and use examples you find in your answers. Don't stay in your comfort zone and make the most of every opportunity that comes available to you. Good luck!
