  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • General duties of an engineer such as setting out works and Surveying, using GPS and different technology. Using software such as AutoCAD. involved n some quality works on the paperwork side. Also getting involved in training aspects which are related to the job. Also Involved in Early careers which improves team building and leadership.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt new skills with the basic skills of AutoCAD and also advanced highly on technology on the computer as well as using new equipment which is technology based. I have learnt new leadership skills being on a specific programme and have also learnt new skills in team work, working with a new team.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the practical and theoretical of the entire programme as I am learning something new everyday so it a very varied job and it assures me it is a growing sector of work that I can constantly learn new things and be able to develop myself further.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very organised as one day a week I am training and the rest of the week is on the job learning. This means that I constantly know my duties and my schedule which will be expected of me.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot. The senior engineers are very good at helping when needed in the case where I do not understand something. I also receive support from the other members of the team to do with the theoretical part of my training.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A lot. they provide support in the case of personal circumstances as well as if you need help with any of the theory that is required as well as the coursework if needed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think it is very transferable as it helps you with construction as a whole and helping to understand general processes of construction that I didn't know before. This has helped me to better understand the project and the process that align with this.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, we have Career events such as career fairs to go to schools and be able to talk about the programme and also social activities such as the early career development has residential to a different part of the country to interact with others who are also doing an apprenticeship.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Varied days so not every day is the same and they can provide different projects which increases variety of a workday. Furthermore they offer good benefits and pay. There are good opportunities for training and development if leadership is an aspired goal.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
  • I would say to make sure it is exactly what you would like to do because it is very different to other forms of engineering such as electrical and mechanical.
