  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role has a mix of different tasks, from consistently updating our central sales info application, to customer engagements, and running sessions to aid those delivering our go-to-market messages. There is a mix of team oriented tasks, and others where I can go and complete work on my own, all of this revolves around creating content for our sales team to use to make their job easier.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I definitely have, I had no experience with tech before starting this apprenticeship so I have gained a lot of knowledge around the tech landscape as well as more role-specific elements like discussing new campaigns and upcoming projects. I have also been able to refine some of my pre-existing skills as my team have encouraged me to utilise my previous skills. For example, I have a good knowledge of how to use PowerPoint, and as we create a lot of content on PowerPoint, I am typically the person who will create/alter the slide decks, due to my skillset in this area.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme as it has given me a broader understanding of the market that my organisation sits in, and has taught me/helped me improve on some of the more foundational elements like word/excel as well. However, I do think that some more role-specific elements would be useful, as everything is quite broad and doesn't often have much of an impact on my actual role.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the programme is very clear and it's easy to be checked as well, as there is a website that I can access which has everything that I may need clearly laid out on it with the timeline of everything that I need to complete shown on their as well. I can also contact my training provider at all times if I need help with anything. There was a delay at the start of the apprenticeship scheme, however this has since been solved.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received amazing support from my employer since starting my role. I was given an induction when I first started, and since then I have received support from my manager, team and those outside of my team who I have been in contact with in 1-1s or other work. Whenever I need help or want to learn something, I will always be given the resources/time from my team for this to be put into place, and I can ask any questions without them feeling silly or unimportant and everyone is always ready to help me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I haven't needed to ask for much additional support on my training programme, due to how clear everything has been. But when I have asked for support it has been given to me as needed, there is also help during the apprenticeship sessions as my training provider outlines everything that we will need to move forward and books in time with us whenever we need additional help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think that it has given me broader insights into the market of my job, as well as laws/legislations and other topics similar to this. I also think that the qualification helps me to perform my role better because it has given me more knowledge around how to present to an audience as well as how to use Work/PowerPoint/Excel more effectively, which I use very often in my job role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots of extra-curricular activities at work, there are often social activities going on like meals out and nights out. There are also networking events, for example, in September we have a Kick-off where everyone in the company gets together to celebrate the end of the financial year. I have also had the opportunity to network the other offices with other members of my team and have a monthly day where I travel to my team leaders office to network there. Finally, there are also communities you can join which have events/meetings to talk to others in those networks e.g. Women In Business/Pride.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Softcat to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Softcat to a friend, because the atmosphere of the company encourages growth, not just to benefit the company but for your own self-improvement. Everyone really wants the best for you and I have been able to greatly develop my skills over the past 7 months, as well as progress and settle into my job role as well. It really is an incredibly positive place to work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Softcat?
  • Be yourself, because they are looking for individuality and the things that you excel at as an individual. Also, make sure that you are prepared and are ready to get stuck into your job, because you really do see the benefits of your hard work here, and you get consistent praise and rewards for your work when you put in that extra bit of effort.
