My role as a sales apprentice includes calling companies to obtain purchasing contacts to introduce myself to, calling prospects in attempt to gain an order and pricing customers. The main role I have at the moment is to introduce and chase new business for USP Steels.
Since working here I have massively developed my communication skills. Before I joined I had okay communication skills, however being on the phone to new people everyday, helps you develop skills to carry forward a conversation and make sure it is not awkward or the conversation fizzles out.
I relatively enjoy my programme as there and pros and cons. I have a fantastic tutor who always supports me and is great to talk to, and I enjoy learning new ideas around business when I do work towards my programme. However, as I am currently in sales it is difficult to balance my apprenticeship work with my standard day to day work.
The structure of my programme is solid as I don't get too much work at once and get set a task for every 2 weeks, which works well with my schedule.
I am supported greatly by my employer, especially my director. The whole sales team give me handfuls of advice and are always available if I am stuck on anything. My director also helps me with prices and dealing with new prospects etc.
My Apprentice Tutor is brilliant and always helps me when I need it. He is friendly and we got on well whenever we meet for a check in or any workshops. He provides me support when I need it and I feel more than comfortable contacting him if there were any issues.
The training I have partaken in has helped me further develop my knowledge of business in this industry as a whole. By learning about stakeholders, different business structures and rules and regulations it has helped me understand more of what goes on behind the scenes.
USP Steels participates in events such as the dragon boat race, for charity, Award shows outside of work and various other work events.
