I am a fourth year degree engineering apprentice and my job consists of going on different site visits for witnessing, inspections etc, as well as creating MEP designs within the commercial sector. I also work in the office and liaise with both mechanical and electrical engineers on a daily basis.
I have developed on my time managements skills, for both my office/ work life and my university studies. I have also developed on my punctual skills by always being present and on time in the office or any external meetings. I have learnt how to use software such as CAD and evit for my day-to-day tasks.
I really enjoy the programme as well as working with my current employer. I have regular meetings with my mentors and line managers, which helps with my development. I also like how the company is made up of a large amount of apprentices, making it easier for me to network with people my age within the company.
The programme is well organised and structured. There are different individuals that help me on a daily basis such as a line manager who I report to daily, my university mentor, my training and development mentor and my colleagues who I work with on a daily basis to help deliver projects on time.
I receive a lot of support from my employer. As stated previously, there are multiple people within the company that play a role to help enhance my current knowledge and development. They help me stay on track with my learning and development. I have frequent meetings with them, and this helps.
I receive a lot of support from my training provider, when working towards my qualification. I am able to email my lecturers if I have any questions and they will help by answering my questions. They also conduct my quarterly meetings with my mentor and this helps me see if I am on track.
My qualification if very relevant, since some of the modules I learn about are used within my office role. This includes duct sizing, using IES software's for thermal modelling. The maths calculations are also relevant with my work role, since the principles cross over. This is beneficial for me.
There are a lot of opportunities for social events and my group tend to plan one every few months. I have also joined a lot of networking events and completed a one month secondment, which is helping towards my development. There is also a football team and we compete whenever there are friendly mathces.
Yes
The work culture is great. Everyone is friendly and willing to help if you have any issues or concerns. The work balance is also fair and the mechanical/ electrical engineers are very skilled individuals with years of experience. The projects that are delivered within TB+A are always at a high and professional quality.
When applying, ensure that you display all of you academic capabilities and any previous experience. I work in the commercial sector, but TB+A also work in the residential and healthcare etc. It is important to research all of the different sectors and see which one best suits you as an individual.
