I am in the Sustainable Investing function and more specifically in Stewardship. Our team engages with companies to discuss various topics including environmental, social and governance factors. We also facilitate proxy voting. I support the team through procuring research, reporting, and working on the operational aspects. As I become more knowledgeable, I will become increasingly integrated within the engagement portion and begin actively participating in conversations with companies,
Yes, I have learnt/developed various skills including my communication skills (both written and verbal), leadership skills, attention to detail, Excel skills, and many others. Being part of such an experienced team has allowed me to absorb knowledge from my colleagues and grow both my interpersonal and professional skillset. Through university I have also developed my essay/report writing skills.
I am thoroughly enjoying my programme. I am gaining invaluable skills and experience through working at UBS whilst concurrently developing my knowledge through university. The social aspect of the programme has also been excellent as UBS hosts a multitude of events and encourages social interaction between not only apprentices but also the wider firm.
The apprenticeship is extremely well structured. We learn of the basic structure during inductions for both UoE and UBS. I personally have bi-weekly checkups with my Line Manager and monthly/quarterly checkups with my Academic mentor to ensure I am on track, in terms of progress. There also various resources available to answers any queries I may have.
Although balancing the workload between university, professional qualifications and actual work can be difficult, I receive a huge amount of support from my employer. From flexibility when it comes to revising for exams, to access to resources to to support my mental health; I receive unconditional support to ensure that I thrive in all aspects of my apprenticeship.
I also receive a lot of support from the University of Exeter. They provide revision guides/books for professional qualification, mock examinations as well as access to various online resources. Alongside lectures, I also have the ability to request support from lecturers, one-to-one if needed. I also get given support in refining my revision techniques to ensure I use my time effectively.
I feel that the qualifications I am working towards through my training provider help immensely in allowing me to perform my role better. The knowledge I am gaining is helping to build a foundation upon which I can grow and develop. Being completely new in the industry, the learnings from my qualifications have allowed me to better understand discussions during meetings and allowed me to begin actively participating.
Yes, there are various extra-curricular activities to get involved in which encompass various interests such as sports and culture. There are also a huge amount of volunteering opportunities. Participating in such activities is encouraged, to allow you to not only develop your professional network but also create a sense of belonging within the workplace.
Yes
I would recommend UBS to a friend because of the culture and the support I receive. UBS has a diverse and inclusive culture which promotes collaboration and innovation to create a sense of unity within the company. I also receive unconditional support from my peers and the wider firm, allowing me to grow not only professionally but also as a person.
I would give 3 main tips. Firstly be genuinely interested in the field/division you are applying for as that is what differentiates you from others. Secondly, I would say that make sure you prepare; research UBS, do mock interview/assessment centres. Finally, utilize the STAR technique to structure your answers effectively.
