As an engineering apprentice at Gatwick Airport, I work/shadow technicians across different engineering sections at the airport, these include HVAC ,specialist systems, baggage, airfield, LSCA and shuttle. As an apprentice I try to learn and gather as much knowledge from these techs to help me in the future.
Every day I learn new skills, that's the main bit about being an apprentice. The further I go into my apprenticeship the more skills I am gaining and developing. working at Gatwick is great for this as every day I feel like I learning something new.
I love working at Gatwick, there are so many opportunities here and a great prospect for growth, even as an apprentice now I can see where I would like to get to in my Gatwick career.
The structure of my programme is very good, there is a good balance of work to college, when at work my boss always ensure that we have the correct amount of time on each section to allow us all to get the best out of each section.
I receive so much support from my employer, any help that I need regarding college work they will always give me the time to complete in work hours, if I need to. Any problems that I have regarding work/college they will always be there to support me.
I do feel I receive support from my training provider, however I think this year there could have been a bit better organisation from the college regarding assignments and rotations of teachers.
The qualification that I will eventually get at the end of my apprenticeship will help me massively when completing my day to day work at Gatwick. I will have the right technical skills and the background knowledge to help me overcome problems that arise in the workplace.
My company sometimes organises social/ sport events for people to get involved in, however I feel like there could be more events that could happen. There are plenty of networking events that take place, alongside with STEM events that us apprentices get massively involved in.
Yes
I recommend working at Gatwick airport as its a great place to gain a career in a lot of things, in my case engineering. You will learn something new everyday and the people you will work with are great. You will get the chance to be involved in a lot of projects as well.
When applying to work at Gatwick Airport just be yourself and always come across confident, list any achievements you have gained and why you think you are the best for the job that you applying for. Always say what your strengths are and why they may be beneficial for the job that you are applying for.
