Working on TRU (the Transpennine Route Upgrade), specifically on the mining and mitigation team. I am based In and around Huddersfield Station, working as a civil engineer apprentice. My day-to-day role involves setting out, Cat scanning, task briefs, work package plans and quality management.
Since starting on site in November, I have attended numerous training courses and retained multiple new certificates/qualifications. For example, I have my Cat&Genny, Personal track safety, CSCS, Buried Service Coordinator and Your safety is my safety certificates. I have also been on AutoCad training, which has massively helped me develop my skills, whilst on site.
I am so glad I chose to do an apprenticeship with BAM. I Enjoy the programme more and more everyday. Each day I learn something new and l’m able to get involved in more activities and challenges. Everyone on my team made me feel very comfortable when I first joined and they all continue to look out for me. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.
I think BAM are a very experienced company when organising Apprenticeship Programmes. I have never once felt unsure or confused during the application process and or my role once joining. However, I know if I was ever confused, there are plenty competent employees, able and willing to help.
My Line Manager speaks with me daily to ensure I am developing new skills and learning new methodologies. Not only does he ensure I am progressing academically, but he has made sure to create a relationship where I am comfortable to speak to him if I am ever in doubt or worried about anything.
My training provider supports me whilst working on my qualifications and ensures I am achieving grades at my highest capability. They have guided me through the Apprenticeship course and always been willing and able to help whenever I needed. This outstanding support has enabled me to achieve distinction level grades.
My training provider helps me gain a good foundation knowledge on the components of civil engineering, which I can then develop and test out in real life, on site. Without the help from my training provider, I would have little to no knowledge whilst on site which would make my time a lot more difficult.
My site has a football team which play every Wednesday. It is a great opportunity for our colleagues to develop a relationship outside the work place and a good opportunity to get outside and exercise.
Yes
BAM offer a fair and rewarding apprenticeship scheme, You are able to learn and earn at the same time. All my colleagues have a positive attitude, work hard and look after each other. What’s not to like?
Be open minded, try and get involved in as much as possible. Work hard whilst at college/university and always ask questions. When on site, try and learn as much as possible, continue to ask colleagues for a new task if you are short of work and try to get on as many training courses as possible.
