My role is an aircraft maintenance apprentice. This means I will be working alongside licensed engineers in a hangar environment on live aircraft. I will be supervised by them and will learn from them. I also have completed a set of modules to gain a knowledge on aircraft maintenance.
During my apprenticeship I have learnt various workshop hand skills such as filing, drilling, riveting, and bending metal sheets. I have also developed various skills for working in a hangar environment such as, communication, leadership, listening and other hand skills to use on an aircraft.
I have enjoyed my programme so far, I started with 13 other apprentices and have enjoyed being part of a team that is all learning together.
The programme can sometimes be unorganised but this is probably due to the large number of apprenticeship they have. Some information like shifts and times are given at very short notice or not given at all.
Not much support is given from the employer, however if you request support it will be given to you. This allows you to get on with things yourself and can help you learn more.
My training provider helped me pass all of my modules first time and I felt confident going into every exam.
I have learnt a lot about aircraft maintenance since I started this apprenticeship and this will definitely help me perform better in my role.
No extra-curricular activities available at work that I am aware of.
Yes
It is a very useful apprenticeship as it is hard to get a job in aircraft maintenance without doing one. Also the pay is good and there are lots of perks given to you working for british airways.
It is a very good place to work and you will learn a lot doing the apprenticeship.
