  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Building services engineering Apprentices use their technical knowledge to deliver, or address problems with, building services systems that are to be designed, manufactured, installed, managed or maintained, within a building. The main types of building services systems are mechanical (heating, ventilation, and cooling), electrical (power, lighting etc) and public health (water services and drainage).

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes many such as: Employ a range of advanced mathematical, statistical and data interpretation tools, using analytical and computational methods to interpret and solve well-defined building services engineering problems. Interpret and compare performance information to choose compliant materials, components or parts. Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address well-defined building services engineering problems.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is very engaging and enjoyable. A lot to learn, good support has been given to learn. Professional and well-grounded education provider. Numerous tasks to complete daily that have a large array of diverse problems, these problems encouraging a near perpetual sense of learning. Strong communication between me and the senior leadership team.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured: there is quarterly meetings with a Skills Reviewer from London South Bank University to make sure that I am keeping on track with my apprenticeship progress as well as keep up to date with support needs. BAM as a company have a general attitude of open communication too.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Decent amount of support, my mentor provides me with a daily update of my tasks, upcoming projects and great communication whenever there is a change in the program. My mentor always makes sure that he is always available for me whenever I have a question or doubts about certain new tasks on the job.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider supports me with my educational part of my Apprenticeship. They provide help through Aptem; they help me improve my knowledge of the role and provide guidance with tasks I may not be too sure about. They also help me solidify skills I might have gained through work

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It teaches me the knowledge I need to know in order to perform accordingly in my role as an engineer. I feel more confident and ready to take on new tasks when I know that I will gain a qualification at the end of my study course. Thus therefore allows me to perform better.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there is numerous and many; some of these include activities such as; after-work drinks, a social and sports club that offers discounted rates for sport and social events occurring i.e. cricket, football, rugby, festivals, concerts and more. Professional networking events are common and easily accessible to register to with the help of my mentor and other senior professionals.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • This company offers a lot and numerous big opportunities. The culture at this company is something I've never experienced before. Everyone is very supportive, wants to see you grow and provides you with the best environment to learn and familiarize yourself with the work you're about to be part of.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • Go in with a keen attitude and lots of enthusiasm. As an Apprentice your role is to learn and so every question related to the role, the industry and e.t.c. is always valid and some crucial to your understanding and growth. Make sure to prioritize your studies alongside work.
