Within Deloitte, I am in the audit department which entails auditing a variety of companies financial accounts to ensure that the correct profits are being stated. This involves interacting with the clients on a day to day basis and this school leaver scheme allows you to work with a variety of different sectors of business, such as food and business, property development, retail and many more.
Throughout this scheme, I hope to gain my ACA qualification which is a worldwide recognised accounting qualification, as well as attending many training sessions provided by Deloitte to improve the professional skills needed within the job, such as communicating with clients.
I very much enjoy the programme as it has allowed me to meet a wide variety of people who have all helped me to settle in to the job and have provided me with a positive atmosphere to work in.
Joining one of the top 4 accountants in the world seemed an intimidating idea on the first day, however even though I have not got the university experience behind me, I am still treated as the same level as graduates when being allocated to jobs and completing the training within the first few weeks. There are internal recognition methods to show a manager's appreciation for the work that was completed on the job, however the distribution of these sometimes seem sparse and is very dependent upon the management team involved.
There are a wide variety of people who are available to talk to if you are experiencing any problems, including a buddy who is a student on the same scheme but just a year in advance and therefore this is very useful as you may not always want to talk to a senior member of staff.
There is a tutor contact for all Brightstarts at Kaplan College for when we have any issues in the run up to exams who is always available to provide support, as well as the tutor who ran the initial tuition is also available to contact if their are any questions too.
With the support of the exam manager being available, any questions prior to exams being completed were able to be answered. However, with some exams being placed during what is known as 'busy season' there is not always the availability to work standard hours to allow sufficient revision to be completed, this meaning that there is an unfair revision balance across the students as there is no set structure to the revision time allowed.
The salary covers the living costs that I incur and there is also the availability of claiming expenses to cover the majority of travelling costs.
At Deloitte there are a wide variety of events outside of work to get involved in, including both recruitment events and charity events, such as the Ride Across Britain. The variety events means that there is something to appeal to everyone, meaning that everyone can get involved where they feel applicable.
Yes
I very much enjoy the scheme that I am involved in and I have met some amazing people on my journey so far, who have all helped me develop in ways beyond imagination. The opportunities available at Deloitte are endless.
Throughout the application process and interviews, be yourself as this allows a true representation to be seen and when joining the firm, be prepared to work hard but there are many rewards along the way.
