When you are a first year apprentice you will spend the entire year in college, the time you spend at college will let you learn and refine skills so that it is is suitable for the shop floor. Mondays are a BTEC college down whereas Tuesday to Friday is workshop days
I have learned lots of new skills such as being able to create schematics and make pneumatic systems. I have also developed my maths and refined my old skills such as milling, turning and hand fitting. I have also learnt how to draw a product so that it is understandable
I thoroughly enjoy the programme since each tutor and teacher specialize in different areas meaning that we can utilize their knowledge to progress ourselves to be better within the field. As you progress through the programme and settle in you will enjoy it more since you have a better understanding
The structure is set at the start of the year by BMW so you will know when your holidays are and what the plan is for the 4 years overall the structure for BMW is set very well. BMET have a structure as well as in how they're going to teach you however this can change overtime like it has for my year.
If I need help or need advice my manager is always willing to help and guide me through what has to be done, they are friendly and ensures to support apprentices when necessary. We have weekly meeting with our manager where we talk about our week and how the overall apprenticeship is going.
The tutors down in the workshop help a lot during the training phase, this is done to ensure that you understand how the work is meant to be done. On the final week of the rotation you will enter the assessment phase, this is a one week period where you have to demonstrate what you learnt by completing the tasks set.
I believe that it does help me perform better in my role since I would have learnt the basic skills required. In addition if you struggle you can ask for more tasks or help if you feel that it is necessary. However if specialized tutors are not available then you will miss out on learning properly
There are numerous extra curricular activities such as the newsletter team which is where you will write a monthly report on what is happening in your plant. There is also a new conservation team, this is where you try improve the wildlife area that we have at plant Swindon by adding or renovating.
Yes
I would recommend it because its an opportunity to work for a well recognised company whilst learning. In addition working for BMW opens up multiple pathways for the future and will make you a better and more independent engineer. Finally I believe that this apprenticeship has lots of friendly and supporting people.
Bring the best version of yourself since the employers just want to see who you are and how well you work in different environment. Show the employers why you will be suitable for the job by ensuring that you answer questions to the job role liking. Attitude is also very important.
