  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a level 3 maintenance technician apprentice my first year consists of a mixture of college and practical skills practice. 1 day a week I have a college lesson in a classroom where I learn the theory of engineering and the rest of the week consists of hand on practical experience. e.g. milling, business in the workplace, turning, hand fitting, fluid power, plc, hand fitting, mechanical and welding. following the first year I will get to experience working on the job maintaining and fixing any machinery that is used during production.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • during this apprenticeship I have been able to learn a range of new skills such as, fluid power, PLCs, welding, milling and turning as well as building onto other previous skills at a higher level then before. This apprenticeship pushes you to achieve the best you possibly can and give you lots of support if you need it!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship so far as I have had the chance to push myself and develop a range of skills from engineering based skills to communication. The format of work/learning in this apprenticeship is perfect, allowing you to feel part of a proffesional working environment and be treated like any other colleague whilst also being able to continue learning and expanding your knowlege.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of this apprenticeship for me has been brilliant. By spending the first year building on you knowledge of engineering, in both the theory and practical side, you are then allowed to apply everything you have learnt in the real job. Then going on spending 3 years experiencing different elements of the business allowing you to decide on the area that best suits you to.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer supply's a lot of support with issues inside and outside of work, if you ever have any problems you are always made to feel comfortable to express them knowing a solution will be found. not only this but my employer always strives for everyone to be the best they can be, encouraging extra curricular activity's that can benefit in a range of areas such as character building and skill development.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • my training provider will always support me in working to wards my qualifications helping me strive to do the best i possibly can. they are always available to help me whether its via email or face to face. if you are ever feeling overloaded and that your doing to much they will help you in spreading out the workload in a more manageable way allowing you to achieve what you need to.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • my qualification is an engineering qualification which teaches me all about the behavior of materials, physics of components and communication in the engineering world, on top of this I also study a range of practical skills. I believe that this will prove very useful when I am later exposed to the real role as i will have a received a taster of what I'm going into and will have foundations to build on with experience.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • within my work there are a range of extra curricular activities that you are free to participate in, these include a charity team, news letter team, wildlife conservation team. each of these are a really great opportunity to character build and also network. on top of this my workplace encourages the entry of skill based competitions for example the world skills event. all support needed in the lead up to this competition is catered for by both my training provider and the company.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • This company is a really great place to enter an apprenticeship as even though you are still learning you really feel part of the team just like any other employee. they will push you to be the best version of yourself supplying you will all the support you may require.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • when applying I would recommend performing plenty of research. look into what the job role involves what you will be doing as well as what else is going on within the company at the minute. most importantly be yourself, take this opportunity to showcase yourself to the company and let them know why you would be good for the role.
