I am a Quantity Surveyor which means I manage finances and try to control costs on construction projects. I send out tenders to subcontractors and select the most cost efficient and highest quality one to work for us. Then over the course of a project I manage and review the finances and how well the subcontractors do for us.
My communication has developed since taking this role as I deal with a wide variety of people day to day. Subcontractors, site managers, buyers, technical departments, sales & marketing and others. My negotiation skills have improved as I most be firm and try to achieve the best prices. Other skills would include becoming more competent on computers and microsoft appliances
I enjoy the programme, because it is relevant to my role and can sometimes give me knowledge to apply in the workplace. However, some information can sometimes seem unnecessary as it it not very applicable to my role. But overall the sessions are enjoyable.
It is well structured as we have a similar timetable week in week out. My tutor is also often available to support which is very useful for ensuring your assignments are okay.
My employer, is very helpful as they organise events for the younger workers within the company. These include workshops for different construction areas, like sustainability workshops.
As previously mentioned, my tutor is happy to support me on my assignment at different hours to the allocated learning ones. This is useful as it helps me to succeed on my assignments.
I learn more from going to work each day and getting experience than learning through the course. The course can be helpful but majority of the things we learn i am already familiar with. Or the content learnt is not applicable to my role.
We are often invited to take part in charity events, with clients or subcontractors. My company will also hold social events to improve bonding.
Yes
The people in the company are very welcoming and make the work day more enjoyable. Although the company is going through mass changes, increasing workload. The attitudes of everyone is mostly positive and supportive.
Be a sponge, and soak up as much knowledge from anyone you can regardless if their role is slightly different to yours.
