I work in structures design, it involves designing and overviewing large schemes on structures such as bridges and ensuring the scheme goes through smoothly whether it is a refurbishment or a replacement structure.
I have learnt many skills surrounding civil engineering in the highways department from roads and what goes into them and the different materials used, to what the thought processes are for structures and what goes into a new bridge design or new wall.
As I was straight from secondary school and had no experience in these fields I have really enjoyed learning a lot of different highways related information, and learning how to use different programs such as AutoCAD has been really good for me and really enjoyable.
It has been well structured with moving placement and allowing us to experience different things that aren't in the normal day to day work. There has also been opportunities to try different areas allowing us to seek where we would want a job role permananently.
Each mentor in each sector has supported me a lot and helped me by teaching me all my skills and knowledge I now have. I have also had people supporting me in areas such as recruitment and college help within the company.
The support has been mixed as we went through 3 teachers, one of them didn't give good support whilst our final teacher did give good support when we asked and helped us with our assignments where possible. So far there has been a lack of support for our EPA.
At times there has been bits of the qualification that directly relate to work and have been hand in hand with what I am doing in my work whilst a lot of it, anything building related, had no correlation to my work and so wasn't of much use in work atmosphere.
There is access to many online and in person extra-curricular activities and there is access to things like cheaper gym memberships within Derbyshire. I don't personally use or do any but I do know of there existence.
Yes
It has been very good at teaching me the skills I have now and helping me to find the right area for me. There is also many good benefits to working here that make a large difference to the mental of a person when working at a company.
Keep an open mind and be willing to learn, be honest and willing to try new stuff or try the suggestions of other people
