the first year we spend most of our time has been in a classroom studying for CAA exams. we do some practical based around module 7, this is mostly metal work. the other practical we do is working on training spec versions of aircraft components. The second year we will be on the job training.
I have developed existing skills I learnt at college once I left school. I have learn more efficient and more techniques to the skills so have defiantly developed my skills.
i feel like some of the work could be more relevant and thus would be more enjoyable. some of the more direct modules of study are very enjoyable, especially the ones that's are very close to what we will be doing in our carriers, such as the practical phases.
we are given time tables and dates/ times for things but they often move. things like exam dates move regularly from dates and times. our time tables specify when we will be starting and finishing a module and these dates often change as well. there is added time for catch up for failures or running over on practical modules but these arnt a;ways helpful. my cohort all ran over on practical and need more time so it was taken form other places.
our employer is rather supportive and easily answer any questions. instructor we have from our company are always helpful. support is given but does defiantly has to be requested and isn't just given. we have reviews regularly when they ask about wellbeing and have opportunity's to speak up.
the training mangers from the training provider are simial to the employer where you are given help but it does have to be requested. the employer and trainign provider trainign mangers are very much integrated and work well together so you can easily go to either. the trsining provider support isnt generally as good because they have to go through the empolyer before they can do alot of things making them slower to assist.
some of it is definably helpful but some is not. our apprenticeship matches the civilian line of work which means it could miss stuff off at the basic level in terms of being aware of it but they add modules to try and fill those gaps. the modules provided that going into study of things like material's feels to in depth for what we will be doing in our careers. some of the practical is very very good and indefinably helpful.
the closest thing we have are graduation evens where ex apprentices come back for a graduation ceremony. we don't really get to meet people we will be working with until we are working with them. some of us will have been here a year and not see our place of work until we are there. any social activities are down to us to arrange and fund with no support, time or input, this is even encouraged.
Yes
there are some downsides but it is worth it to do an apprenticeship to learn and earn at the same time. i don't believe the experience we will gain in our second year will be incredible valuable despite not all of the first year being.
go for it, look into what you are applying for and clarify what that means to make sure its right for you. you have to be prepared to work hard and give up some of your free time to revise/study and do well but its is doable without giving of all of your social life.
