Apprentice electrical fitter/electrician - Spend my day to day work fitting and terminating electrical systems on board the boat and fitting cable support systems and running in cables whilst working to relevant documentation and drawings.
I have learnt many skills throughout the apprenticeship so far. A crucial skill learnt is how to interpret and understand technical documentation and how to fit and terminate electrical systems that support the operation of the boat when it is in service.
The on-site placements are great and provide a good learning opportunity to support your job role. I have not particularly enjoyed the college experience and the academic side of the qualification is not well tailored to the job role.
The programme is well structured and almost impossible to get wrong. Organisation is one of the weaknesses of the programme and it can sometimes be frustrating with a lack of communication between departments relevant to the apprenticeship.
Support from the company is really good. I have received exceptional support with learning difficulties (ADHD) and I know the company offers very good support with other issues.
Support from my skills coaches and development leader has been excellent. The training provided by the college has been great from a foundational standpoint, but the level 3 part of the qualification is not massively relevant to the job role.
In all honesty, I do not feel the qualification provided is massively useful with the job role. As a mature apprentice it has not really developed my knowledge a huge amount but I could see it being useful for younger apprentices.
There are plenty of enrichment activities to get involved with, but they can be poorly signposted so people may not be aware. Social activities are often organised within the squads for people to go on.
Yes
Its a foot in the door to get into a good engineering company. The salary is competitive and the apprenticeship offers good opportunity to progress with enough ambition and support is continued after the apprenticeship is completed.
Be open to opportunities and get involved with as much as possible. The apprenticeship can feel painfully slow and sometimes be frustrating but the contract and the opportunities presented post apprenticeship make it worth it.
