I am an Apprentice Tunneler and my role is to learn on the job about tunnel construction and to contribute to the project. This involves: -General assistance around the site, repairing site equipment -Cleaning up around site, organisation -Learning how to maintain/repair tunnel transport trains -Learning to use fabrication equipment to provide the tunnels infrastructure -Working on an actual tunneling machine alongside professional tunnelling operatives -Getting on well with the team and contributing to a good moral and drive.
Skills I've learnt: -Fabrication skills; the use of tools to modify materials and produce equipment. -Mechanical skills; repair and maintenance -Several practical health and safety courses Personal and Professional Skills developed: -Productivity -Team cooperation -Confident Communication -Resilience & problem solving strategies
I like the industries culture and the ethos of the operatives. I also really enjoy learning new skills and growing personally and professionally. The range and type of work experience that I've been able to pursue has far exceeded my expectations.
I feel very valued by Costain. The broad range of work experience and training that I've been given proves to me that they really do value my contribution.
My programme has been designed to allow me some ability to decide where I feel I fit in best, enjoy doing, and can contribute the most to. I appreciate this because it gives me a strong sense of autonomy.
Almost all my training has been on-the-job, working alongside the operatives themselves. The support they've provided me has been professional, friendly and to the point.
Any questions that I've raised have been answered. I found that my mentors and managers have been helpful and have encouraged me to do my best.
I would prefer if the salary was higher, but the company does pay for apprentices travel cost which is a huge saving. Overall, I am able to afford my living costs, and still have enough to save.
The work location (London) has been good for me because I can go to work and I can see my friends and family. The company also holds events and parties after successful projects.
