  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role requires me to work with the site manager and to sufficiently and safely run the site. This consists of reading technical drawings, ordering material and updating the programme of the job. When starting a new job I also help complete all the legal documents for a job to start.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Working with Tarmac taught me many things, but the most significant one was how to start a job. From day one me knowing nothing about site progression to current day, being able to complete a programme for a job, completing a risk assessment as well as a method statement, a vehicle and pedestrian protection plan and talking to sub contractors and arranging work for our site.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Work programme has been really good. I've been progressing at a good pace learning from all the skilled workers around me, whether its the site manager, ganger or a QS. To make me understand the business more Tarmac has put me in different departments so that I learn from every aspect of the business.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From my induction day I was told about my programme, its been very well structured so that I explore all the different departments of Tarmac. The first thing I was doing with tarmac was working on site, then I was working along side the site manager in the site office, later on did work with the surface dressing team and soon ill be working with the bridges team.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Although I only go college once a week they have ben really supportive. On our collage course we have a thing called 'blackboard'. On blackboard we can see all our past lessons, upcoming assignments and we also have a area where we can ask our tutors questions about the work were doing at college.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • At college we have learnt a lot about health and safety, Tarmac is all about safety and being taught all the different health and safety legislations at college has helped me in my day to day work. College also makes us write down all the new things we have learnt at work so far, this helps us to look out for new challenges and experiences.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes! Every Tuesday people from Tarmac are invited to play football after work on proper AstroTurf pitches. Also because Tarmac sponsor the Nest in Norwich, Tarmac is invited every year to play in a tournament against other businesses. This has been a really good experience as it gets you closer to the people working along side you.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Tarmac has taught me many things and made me grow as a person. Everyone at Tarmac has been a pleasure to work with and has always been supportive to me. Also Tarmac has many different roles and is very professional when it comes to young people being interested in apprenticeships.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tarmac?
  • Be yourself. Tarmacs main priority is diversity. if you go in for your interview and show your character and your main strengths I guarantee you'll be given a call back. However you should still be and dress professional, trust me this will make a great impact on the person interviewing you.
