  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I'm a Senior HR Services Administrator. I advertise vacancies, add pre-hires to the system, create contracts and send them out. I send all maternity communications. I complete right to work checks. I send our benefits providers our new starters and leavers each month. I manage all queries to do with our clocking in and out system. I help the team with queries during our busy payday period. I process change of start date for our new joiners. I process orders for electric cars.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt a lot of theory behind the decisions that are made within HR. I've also learnt about organisational structure and what motivates people. This will help me to take a more strategic view, when it comes to making decisions. I want my next role in HR to be an HR Business Partner role, and the CIPD level 5 will provide the skills I need to do this role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy learning about new theories and putting them into practice. I find the psychology behind the theories fascinating and I'm glad I'm able to use my bachelors degree in Psychology! The assignments help to cement the knowledge. The Babington resources are well laid out and easy to follow.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is well structured. The learning material is clear and the command verbs are explained, so you know what to focus on when answering the assessment/assignment questions. I have regular learner interactions with my tutor at Babington. It's great that I am able to go back and access completed sections if I want to.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive one day a week study day which is very useful. It means I can give my course my undivided attention, and get the assignments done. I would really struggle to do this course in my spare time as I work full time and have an 8 year old daughter, so evenings and weekends are spent with her.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have regular catch ups with my tutor. My tutor has also offered to look over some of my answers to ensure I'm on the right track before submitting for official marking. We will be doing mock professional discussions to prepare me for the real one. And she will also provide guidance on my project.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My current role is very transactional in nature, so I don't really get to put what I have learnt into practice. However, the training will definitely help me in my next role. I'm very excited start using the new skills I have learnt. Everything should still be fresh in my mind, so can be utilised.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Wickes to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The culture here is amazing! You can be yourself and all my colleagues are very supportive. We don't throw each other under the bus when things go wrong, and I have people I can reach out to if I need help. This sounds like a simple thing. However, in previous roles there were many people on long term sick so it was difficult to know who to reach out to.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Wickes?
  • Try not to get too nervous in the interview- I know this can be easier said than done! But being yourself and being able to show your personality goes a long way. At the end of the day, the person interviewing you wants to ensure that you are a good fit for the business as well as that you can do the job.
