  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Placement in different departments on a 6 month per rotation basis, including, upstream and downstream processing, analytics, warehouse and procurement. Topping up of laboratory consumables, lab coat collection, waste disposal. My current main duties are GMP clean room cleaning.

  • Fundamental lab skills and behaviour. Viral manufacture process and documentation. GMP clean room behaviour.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed the lab experience in the workplace and flexibility of the online/ distance learning with the university.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The university side is well managed and further learning opportunities are well signposted. I am in the second wave of apprentices taken on by my workplace and I feel that they generally lack experience but are still able to provide basic laboratory experiences.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am fully supported by my workplace to attend university related events. At work, I am usually asked to prioritise business needs rather than being able to spend more time in the lab, even though I am on the laboratory scientist degree. I am mainly asked to clean,

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have a line manager that I report to directly as well as a dedicated supervisor for each department rotation. They help me identify skills, knowledge and behaviour points that relates to my degree and help find me oppertunities to develop each area.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my provider has given me valuable experience to shadow and join in on viral manufacturing processes and experience to operate some instruments such as the AKTA chromatography machines myself. It would be even better if I could have more time in some departments such as process development over others such as warehouse and procurement

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have joined my company's book club were we get together on a monthly basis to discuss the book of the month. There's also been staff led social events such as pool, bowling and meals together within departments or across different departments. The company has also hosted specific

  • No


  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is currently undergoing a lot of development and trying to get their GMP license which means that there isn't a lot of time or opportunity for training and a lot of my day to day duties are to meet business needs rather than training towards the degree
