I work within machining and i am currently in my final placement running and maintaining a machine, where i work with others to solve problems as they arise to keep production running. I also fix any small breakdowns that occur on the machine i am responsible for and help maintenance if bigger breakdowns occur.
Over the course of my apprenticeship on site i have learned a lot of maintenance skills attending breakdowns, how to fault find, the process of running a machine and overall how the manufacturing process takes place. I also learned a lot of basic hand skills, milling and turning in the first year.
I have greatly enjoyed the work i have done onsite, as its been interesting getting to learn about the equipment and the people i have worked with have been welcoming, friendly and willing to let me get involved. The offsite training has not been as enjoyable but has gone okay.
Through the apprenticeship i have had a placement plan put in place which has allowed me to know where i will be going and what i will be learning, there have been some changes but these have been due to wider changes in the business but i feel these have now been well explained.
My apprentice manager has been nothing but helpful whenever there have been any issues and i feel that i can always approach them. My placement manager has always been helpful when i have queries about my placements and goes out there way to check how it going putting meetings in place regularly.
My qualifications have gone well and i have had some brilliant teachers through my time in both college and university have helped me through. However there have been issue with the some teachers who have not taught well and left us unsure and worried about getting our work done to a good level.
The level two qualification i did in my first year teaching me competencies have been useful when working within mainantace and other areas of the factory, although i am glad i have done a degree and i am sure it will be useful in the future, but it doesn't apply much at the moment.
There are a number of activities for apprentices and the company as a whole such as the mountain challenge, which is a weekend of walking. On the shifts i have worked on there are many events planned such as weekly football, days out and meeting after work to socialise with each other.
Yes
I have learned a lot from college and the onsite placements i have been part of and feel i am more capable now and ready to work within the company. I am happy to have got the qualifications i have done and feel the degree will be useful for the future.
