The role of an apprentice mainly involves learning during placements in different departments. The first year of the apprenticeship is spent in a workshop learning hands foundational engineering skills. The rest of the apprenticeship is on placements, mainly shadow maintenance teams as they go to breakdowns.
I have learnt many new skills, particularly in regards to fault finding and problem solving. I have learnt how to use the a variety of different tools.
I enjoy the hands on aspect of the work, and enjoy socialising with the other apprentices.
The is a clear structure to the apprenticeship. The first year is in the training workshop, there are 5, 3 month long placements is different buildings, then placements in your final building, before you go on shift.
I receive some support from my employer, primarily in the form of the 3 monthly reviews and feedback on submitted work. Any issues the employer has are noramally raised and rectified before they become serious problems.
The training provider gives some support on college assignments.
