My role involves commissioning electrical and mechanical systems on the Type 26 programme. I split my time between placement and college. At college we are completing a PEO before moving onto a HNC and HND.
I have developed my communication skills and team working skills as this is something that I have to use in everyday tasks.
I enjoy my programme and find the work and tasks that I will have to carry out very interesting however, due to the ship being in the early stages of production we are not very busy at the moment.
We have missed a lot of college days due to them being on strike however, the organisation makes sure that we are on placement to substitute the strikes. Even although there has been many strikes it has no put us behind in completing our PEO.
My employer is very supportive as they frequently check in with us on how we are getting on, any issues we have or any help we need.
So far my training provider has supported me as much as needed but this is hard to tell as support has not been necessary.
It offers me a basic understanding of many different practical aspects however, I think it could be made more specific to my role.
Within our team sports activities have been created but I am not aware of any others within the business.
Yes
I would recommend working with BAE systems as I think they are a good employer and have many diverse roles within the business.
I would advise others to do work experience with BAE or similar companies first to get a feel for the role they are interested in and see if it suits them.
