The day to day actvities include using excel spreadsheets for cost monitoring, as well as using supervisor sheets to get information from the works that happened the previous week. It also includes talking to companies you are working with and their QS's to ensure that Compensation events and early warnings are implemented correctly.
I have learnt how to become a good Quantity Surveyor, such as being able to speak well in meetings to discuss Compensation events and come to agreements on these points, as well as increasing my knowledge of excel and being able to use it more proficiently.
I enjoy my programme as I am constantly getting to meet new people and expand my network. I also enjoy learning new parts of the job as it feels rewarding when I understand something new. I also enjoy spending time on site as well as the office which means no day is the same as the next.
The Structure of the programme is very good as I know where I will be, eg in college, every week. The timings are good and I receive lots of advice on going out on site and meetings in advance.
The support I receive from my employer is great, as if I am struggling with something I can ask anyone and they will help as best they can. I will also work with people through jobs instead of being expected to just do it on my own. I find this very helpful.
My training provider is a lot more research based than I would like, as this is my first course as a quantity surveyor, I feel like it could be more orientated to teaching instead of research.
I have been to some expos which have shown what it's like to be in the road industry, as well as parts that you wouldn't see in your day to day roles as it wouldn't usually be involved with your line of work.
