Every day I complete some step of a tax return, and recently started working with the stat accounts team. I interact with my team every day when I am in the office, and sometimes we have a call if were working from home. My responsibilities include completing, filing and sending payment for returns.
I have learnt many new skills, I know how to do a lot of different processes that I didn't even know existed before I started working at Tarmac. I have also developed previous skills as I feel I have become more confident and better at communicating with new people.
I really enjoy my apprenticeship as I do something different most days and get to meet a wide variety of new people. Also, I get to move around teams which helps me to expand my knowledge of the business and also learn how to do new things.
When I first started I feel as though there wasn't a very clear cut structure of when I would move through the teams, but I have made sure to chase up on this so that I am sure of what is coming next.
Tarmac are extremely supportive, I have bi-weekly one to one sessions with my line manager to make sure I am getting on well and address any concerns I may have. Also, we have a few weekly catch ups within the team to ensure that everyone is happy with their roles.
HTFT Partnership are very good at providing resources that are extremely useful in studying for the exams, however I have noticed that in general they aren't very quick at replying to any emails I have sent asking questions This isn't a huge problem as they do schedule calls for every month to check in anyway.
My studies help me to perform as I understand the accounting basics, prior to my apprenticeship I had never studied anything within accounting before so it was all new to me. By understanding the basics, I can actually understand why things need to be done, as well as how to do them. However, as I work in tax and haven't covered the tax unit yet, it can be hard to find the link there.
Tarmac do offer the EDP, the early development programme, which aims to empower young people by elevating their skills, developing knowledge and growing networks. They also have a wide variety of communities available to join, such as early careers, LGBTQ+, and many more.
Yes
I have received lots of support since working at Tarmac, and everyone is very friendly. The employee benefits are a big part of it too.
Make sure that you actually know what the business do, and also their belief system surrounding sustainability and health and safety. Tarmac is a great company to work for and there's a job role for everyone.
