As an apprentice my day to day roles vary depending on which department I am working in. However, in each department I am responsible for ensuring that my tasks are carried out on time and to a high standard so that they are beneficial and can be used by whoever requires them.
As part of my apprenticeship I have the opportunity to move around all of the main departments throughout the company and learn new skills that will benefit me throughout my career. As well as this I am completing my HNC business course at college and also my SVQ in Business and Administration level 3.
So far I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as an apprentice at Selex ES as has surpassed my initial expectations. This is mainly because the work I carry out is usually varied which helps keep most tasks I do interesting.
I feel that each department I have been involved with so far has appreciated what I have to offer and this has been shown by my involvement in tasks and also my lines manager praise for the work I have done.
At Selex ES each apprentice has a designated placement plan which is based around which department you may join after your apprenticeship. As a result of this you receive all the necessary training and support needed to enable you to learn the skills which are required in this department.
At college there is limited support available but this is simply due to the fact that you are only there once a week. However, if you do have any questions you can email the lecturers for their opinion and help. As part of the SVQ an assessor comes in every two weeks to make sure you are progressing through this qualification and give you help if necessary.
In order to ensure you are given the necessary support needed to complete a task you usually shadow a fellow worker in the department who walks you through the steps of completing the task. By doing this you are given all of the support you need and if you still have any problems they are more that happy to help.
My salary more than helps meet my travelling and living costs leaving me with enough to either spend on other goods or save up.
At Selex you are encouraged to take part in numerous different events and activates. During my time I have had the opportunity to take part in; our recruitment event, the annual sons and daughters to work day, the cross site forum, charity events and much more.
