  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Roles rotate every 6 months (you pick an available team), ranging from Software Engineering and automation; TV and Dolby Atmos testing; Core-Infrastructure hands on fibre testing; Customer-Experience (CX) data analysis and reporting; Media and Broadcast Data Mining; Many more. Always learning on the job and provided additional training on top of University - Allowed one day a week for personal development.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • You can specialise into whatever you are good at, I personally have learnt a huge range of programming languages and data skills, which I now use day to day within my role. I slowly built up my Network knowledge which has led to an in-depth understanding of the full end to end Network process from BT to the Customer.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Thoroughly enjoyable, surrounded by Apprentices who have an aptitude to learn and colleagues who want to teach you. University and training time is highly valued, so you are given minimum a day a week to study, more when needed and helped when you have questions. Very good work/life balance.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel the programme was structured extremely well a few years before we started, with more options on teams to work with who valued apprentices, but towards the last year has been slightly less fluent, however still not hindered my career or stopped me learning.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Everyone is here to help you, line managers take on Apprentices as a passion to upskill them for the future and make sure they are having a great experience and provide support where needed. You also get a work manager from your rotation who will manage your work stack.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Compared to other courses, this one is wide ranged covering Software, Cyber security, Project management and Networking skills. I think this is delivered well, splitting into chunks and honing in on your skills, lecturers will spend lots of time with you to make sure you are getting the best experience possible.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think it has backed up the knowledge I've been taught by colleagues and laid the fundamentals to grow. Work allows you to specialise in areas, whilst University built the bases to grow from.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many team events which are paid for and allow for networking with other teams. You get volunteering days which you can get time to help the community or raise money - As an Apprentice I would say you spend roughly a tenth of your time doing this on top of work, training and University. Teams and buildings also host many charity events throughout the year to get involved with, from bake sales to sports tournaments to challenges like 3 peaks.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I believe BT is one of the best Apprenticeships you can get, with so much to learn both in and out of work that are STEM skills of the future. You come out of it with a Degree and pay is great for an Apprenticeship, with a yearly pay rise of £3500, final year you get an even bigger leap.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • Whoever you are as a person, be open to learn and listen to others, but also don't be scared to ask questions as everyone is super friendly and love to help you grow. Say yes to every opportunity and network with as many people as possible, this will get your name out there and build foundations for your future.
