  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting this apprenticeship, I’ve seen a significant improvement in my technical skills related to data science. This is largely due to the continuous application of these skills in various projects I’ve been involved in. At just over the halfway point in my apprenticeship, I’ve had the chance to lead a few small to mid-sized data science projects. Having this level of experience so early in my career has been fantastic for my learning and development. In addition to my technical skills, my soft skills, such as interpersonal skills, have also developed. My role involves daily presentations and communication with a diverse group of stakeholders, which provides me with ample opportunities to refine and enhance these skills. So, all in all, it’s been a journey of constant growth and improvement.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme. The field of Data Science is so expansive and ever-evolving, it keeps me engaged at all times. The university course does a great job of giving us a wide-angle view of the field, with each module introducing a new aspect of Data Science. We also get to apply what we learn in these modules through mini-projects at work. This hands-on experience really solidifies our learning and makes the whole process quite enjoyable. My role revolves around leveraging Machine Learning for forecasting purposes. It’s a field that’s as intriguing as it is vast, offering endless opportunities for learning. What’s truly rewarding is witnessing the tangible effects of the changes made and implemented business solutions. It’s a constant reminder of the impact my work has, and I find that incredibly fulfilling.

  • My programme is well-organised and structured. It’s designed in a way that allows me to balance my university coursework with my work responsibilities. The course modules are arranged logically, each one building on the last, which helps in understanding the field of Data Science. We also get the opportunity to implement our learnings from University modules to our work by picking up mini projects that align with the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) outlined by the Data Science apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support I receive from my training provider while working towards my qualifications is great. The module lecturers are just an email or a Teams message away, and they usually respond in a timely manner, which is really helpful. The assignment briefs for each module are provided well in advance, giving us ample time to work on them and meet the deadlines. This proactive approach ensures that we are well-prepared and can manage our time effectively. Tripartite meetings are held every three months with my university tutor and work line manager. These meetings are a great platform to discuss any concerns and to ensure that I’m on track with my coursework and projects.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of extra-curricular activities to get involved in at work. From sports like football to various social activities, there’s something for everyone. These activities are usually organised at the office level, so each office has its own groups that anyone can join and take part. In addition to these, I’ve also been part of the Future Careers development teams during my first and second year, which was a great experience. In my first year, I was part of the outreach team, visiting colleges and universities to promote Unilever and share my apprenticeship experience. In my second year, I was part of the team that organised the apprentice open evening. We set up panel guests and activities for the evening, which was a great way to engage with potential future apprentices.
