My role includings shadowing maintenance technicians on various placements on site and learning from them the techniques and skills as well as how to complete a job correctly and efficiently. Day-to-day is a 7am start allowing time to be prepared and in my area I spend my day learning with the maintenance teams and completing a variety of jobs and breakdowns before a 15:30 finish.
I have developed on my existing planning and organisational skills as well as learning new skills in engineering, electrical, PLC coding and more. It is also an opportunity to create a network, building relations within the business in order to further my knowledge and growth as an apprentice and individual.
I very much enjoy the apprenticeship so far I have learnt vast amounts as well as made new friends and networked with colleagues. It is also be extremely interesting to learn the ins and outs of not only a car manufacturing plant but also a business and how everyone is an important cog in the system.
There is a level of organisation which is often achieved but can also be improved on in many areas. The BMET side especially since 2022 has been lacking in structure as well as the integration between each placement. However, I can appreciate the difficulty of balancing 4 years of apprentices on all corners of the plant.
I receive a large amount of support from my employer whether it's mental health based or work based there is always someone to talk to should you require help. This is the same for BMET who apply themselves to improve our ability providing practice sheets, mentors and extra time if necessary.
Please view Q4 & 5. In addition there is an increased interest in helping us build a portfolio to present at the end of the apprenticeship to prove our work and our worth to receive our qualifications. There is also a push to start the foundation degree and improve our qualifications.
See questions 4 through 6. In addition there are regular checks to review our progress and witness jobs being completed which can improve our ability on site.
There are a range of extra-curricular activities to become involved in including a charity team. However, I do not take part in these for personal reasons.
Yes
I feel the apprenticeship has a lot to offer and can really improve someone's lifestyle with many benefits which cannot be overlooked when applying. Not only are getting paid to do a job you'll enjoy but you'll also receive qualifications you can take anywhere. This apprenticeship sets you up to work under a big or small business, improve your confidence and professionalism, as well as your ability to complete maintenance activities which can extend to your own home.
Take your time to understand what you're getting into 4 years is a long time and can cross over big stages of your life, if you're not sure if you want to be in a career in engineering then consider carefully. Be yourself, be professional, and be ready to learn. BMET and the maintenance teams on site expect a high level of interest in the work you're completing, you're selling yourself to be hired in a role with these teams.
