I manage one of the lab development facilities at the Macclesfield campus. This involves finance for the building, health and safety, continuous improvement, new digital technologies, training and inductions, sustainability and general organisation of cross functional groups in the facility.
I have learnt new knowledge and tools in my university course such as budgets for finance or Gantt charts for project management that I have then applied to my role. I have also taken on more responsibility that has increased my confidence through exposure to new experiences.
I really enjoy my program both within my role and the wider apprentice community. The company ensures I am well supported with my university study and that I get as many development opportunities as I can. I also have access to a wide network of apprentices in similar positions.
I like the combination of in person and self taught learning as it allows me to manage my own time and be independent but also provides the support network needed to be successful in my degree. My organisation respects my study time and supports me with developing the skills learnt.
I receive a lot of support from my employer. My line manager has access to the necessary information she needs in order to support an apprentice from the wider apprentice team. I am encouraged to speak up if I am struggling which allows me to get the help I need.
I have two days a month contact time with my training provider which allows for in person support. We also have the option of drop in sessions to help with assignments and an academic mentor to support with developing my portfolio in preparation for my EPA.
There are some elements which do not link directly to my role but that is expected with a broad degree. The majority of what I learn can be applied and if something can't my uni will find a link so I can see the value in the module.
We have an apprentice committee and social society who help to keep the apprentices connected. We also have the opportunity to support as a STEM ambassador at events. There are also a number of activities ran by individual departments such as a charity run or summer BBQ.

They are a great employer who value continuous development and there are so many opportunities to learn about all the different roles. Although a large organisation they make an effort to recognise employees so you don't feel lost or forgotten about.
The AstraZeneca values are key to the way we work so ensuring they align with your own personal values. The community at AZ is so important and being able to join that community and work well with others is as important as the academics.
