Maintaining machinery and equipment used in the processing of exam papers. This includes preventive and reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis as well as training operators in the safe and correct use of the equipment. We also review systems of working with the object of making improvements where possible to efficiency and health and safety, working with management, and the health and safety and facilities teams respectively. We also sometimes provide support to other areas of the business through tasks such as operating the machines we maintain.
Coming to the apprenticeship with a hobbyist background in electrical and mechanical repair but without work experience or formal training in this area, I have been able to develop these skills in a professional context while also receiving the academic training to support my development. I have also leant new skills, this has included on the job training in the use of various equipment and tools as well as fault finding techniques and also being sent on courses covered by my employer to acquire additional skills such as the use of moving elevated work platforms.
Taking part in the programme is an enjoyable experience for me. I would recommend it to anyone considering undertaking an apprenticeship. I have been well supported by the company to develop my existing skills and acquire new ones. I also feel that the company listens to the views of its apprentices in order to improve the apprentice's experience where it can.
The programme is well organised. There is a programme induction at the beginning of the programme which allows new apprentices to meet each other and the apprenticeship team and to receive information about what support is available to them and what to expect from the apprenticeship.
There is a lot of support available to apprentices at Pearson. There is a dedicated apprenticeships team who have regular contact with the apprentices. There are also apprenticeship ambassadors who are able to offer support, attend gateway meetings and provide support with mocks. The business also puts on networking events for apprentices and National Apprenticeship Week events, celebration and awards events.
I receive adequate support from my training provider when working towards my qualifications. My tutor who visits me in my workplace is excellent but the training provider itself has struggled somewhat with staffing issues although these have improved since the start of the course.
The qualification helps me perform better in my role by giving me the knowledge of core concepts related to engineering. It is a good course which covers a good amount of material but the delivery has been somewhat haphazard, particularly at the beginning of the course.
There are some extra-curricular activities to get involved in. There is a sports and social club which costs £1 per month to be a member of and organises after work events, this is open to all at the company. There are also networking events for apprentices. Pearson is a corporate member of the Association of Apprentices.
Yes
