My role varies depending on which department I work within. I move around different departments every three months during my apprenticeship and learn about the departments functionality and get involved within the team working on real work. Examples of this could be testing radar, attending quality assurance meetings or manufacturing a part within our machine shop.
Yes I have learnt a variety of new skills. I have gained skills within our machine shop and can now operate milling machines, lathes etc. I have learnt how to use a variety of test equipment such as oscilloscopes and am familiar with the use of a range of tools. I have also gained skills with the use of Computer Aided Design tools in order to create technical drawings and 3D models.
I really enjoy my programme. I enjoy being able to further my education whilst earning a full time wage. My job allows me to put theory into practice and I find that very rewarding.
I feel Selex values apprentices extremely highly as they know that we are part of the company's future. The company invest in your learning and want you to succeed.
Our programme is structured well. We have a placement plan in place and know what department we are meant to be in and what is expected of us. We attend college one day a week which suits my learning well in comparison to block release.
My training provider gives me as much support as I need. We regularly meet during apprentice monthly meetings and have reviews together every 12 weeks. If there is anything I am struggling with I know I could speak to my training provider with no problems.
My employer supports me very well. I can speak to then when I feel it is necessary and they offer me as much support as possible. They want all apprentices to succeed and their support shows this.
Our salary is reasonable for a second year apprentice. I receive £14,500 a year. I pay for all bills associated with my house and car along with travel costs so an increase would always help but I would say the salary is reasonable for an apprenticeship.
There are various opportunities outside of work. I have been involved in visiting schools to educate them about the opportunities available to them after leaving high school and have been involved in Edinburgh Science Festival through my work.
Yes
I think the company provides good apprenticeship schemes. The salary is above most apprenticeships I know of and it gives you an opportunity to further your education whilst earning.
Be positive, hard working and trustworthy. Apply yourself and sell yourself to the employer. Show that you really want the job and that you will work hard if you get the job.
