Each day is different due to changes in placement- an average day usually involves attending meetings within the team I am currently working in, completing relevant tasks and reviewing and presenting the work I have completed to senior engineers before officially completing the task. There are some placements where not as much work is provided or the placement managers don't seem to be too invested in developing their apprentice however this is an issue that is now being tackled.
I have learnt a lot about engineering and the company as a whole as well as developing my existing presentation and communication skills. This has not only been done through placement but through additional tasks that I have undertaken whilst being supported by the Early Careers Team and fellow apprentices
I enjoy the work provided by the company, in terms of the training provided by the college towards our degree there is a lot left to be desired which makes the educational side of the programme very difficult to enjoy. However, the team I am currently working with have given me a decent workload which is enjoyable.
The structure is currently being reviewed and improved under a new course leader- however there has been a serious lack of organisation with placements being cancelled the day before students are due to start, in terms of our degree we have regularly had tutors leave and no replacement so we often don't receive feedback and grades on time
Early Careers are very supportive of internal and external problems- there are clear pathways to follow and external organisations who can also provide support. There are occupational health, employee assistance and the ethics helpline that are free and provided by the company as well as the union which is available at a lower cost for apprentices
The level of support from the college is underwhelming. There are issues that have been raised multiple times- quality of tutors, quality of teaching, organisation etc.- and we have been promised change but a year later are yet to see any improvement. In terms of learning requirements and support it is hit and miss as to whether the arrangements are implemented.
The modules we have undertaken so far have helped to provide a foundation of understanding- however due to the large variety of placements they have only been useful on some occasions.
There is a socials committee that has recently been created to encourage apprentices to mingle outside of work- the company has sports social clubs that are free to join. There are also often online events to attend
Yes
So far despite its pitfalls it is an enjoyable place to work and is actively working to improve the experience for apprentices
