My job title is 'Building Services Apprentice' and my day-to-day tasks are varied. As this role covers electrical, mechanical and public health engineering I have rotated between disciplines to gain a better understanding and in the process got to work on some great jobs such as stadiums. I also get the chance to work on site occasionally. At the start it can seem like you get just the 'boring tasks' however as you begin to learn you take on more responsibility.
Working with a team and communicating more efficiently are two key skills that I have developed on since starting. I have also had to learn new software and engineering theory however I have had training provided to me whenever needed.
I have enjoyed all areas of work so far and the team and company culture have always been great. It has exceeded my expectations but it has also been a steep learning curve.
I feel valued by all staff, even more so since I have proved that I can learn and take on board bigger tasks. I have been involved in big and small jobs doing various work.
Its well organised by the company and my induction and training were great. Support is always available both on projects and my college work. It can be hard balancing work, college assignments and the NVQ however people are always on hand to help...you just have to ask.
I have a mentor and a line manager at work which are great..no faults. The faults lie with the college as although the teachers are good and know their stuff, the colleges organisation and a problem with one teacher have caused a slow in the learning. However, I'm sure this will improve as I was the first year of the course at the college so they were learning as well.
I receive all the support I need, whether that's help with work based projects or to go through my college assignments. Everyone is always willing to help!
My living costs at the moment are quite small as I live with my parents. Overall the salary is good and I have more then enough to get by each month. You can't argue with it really as they are basically paying for your education and paying you at the same time. If I didn't live at home I think I would struggle to get by on the salary though.
The sports and social committee always have something going on. From big events like the Christmas/summer party to trips to the theatre, the races. There are also regular sporting events, with a weekly football game to the annual company wide sports day.
Yes
Its a fun and friendly place to work and a pleasure to have received the opportunity to work at such a well known company. They also don't limit you so there is always room to further your career.
My application process involved applying online, getting called in to do a simple maths and English exam and then a interview. I found the exams relatively easy however its always better to be prepared so maybe just go over some books. For the following interview I was tasked with doing a presentation on a topic, I done 'CHP: Combined Heat and Power'. I think the main point to get across is to show that you are eager to learn and develop and be enthusiastic. DRESS TO IMPRESS.
