Higher Level Apprenticeship

I joined AQA at the start of 2022 in their Level 4 Cyber Security Technologist & Risk Analyst Apprenticeship as an Assistant Security Analyst. My role involves ensuring the highest levels of confidentiality, availability, and integrity of AQA systems and information by developing, promoting, embedding, and monitoring a consistent and robust approach to IT security, information security, business continuity, and data protection management that reflects industry best practices.

Starting an apprenticeship programme really appealed to me because of the combination of practical experience and formal education. Getting real-world experience in a work environment whilst also improving my abilities through structured learning gives me the opportunity to apply theoretical principles in a real-life scenario. I found that an apprenticeship was the best way for me to launch my career and provide a solid basis for future success because of the mentorship possibilities, and chances for professional growth within AQA.

One of the things I enjoy most about my role is that I get to contribute to AQA’s security infrastructure, which involves actively participating in safeguarding our information assets, fostering awareness amongst colleagues regarding the critical importance of IT security, and devising strategies to prevent cyber-attacks and to secure sensitive information. Our team members are encouraged to acquire new skills and pursue diverse qualifications, which helps me to see a dynamic path in terms of my professional development. I also find that AQA has an incredibly positive work environment, defined by a dedication to maintaining work-life balance, offering flexible scheduling, and implementing robust employee wellness programmes, creating a distinctive and supportive workplace culture.

I’ve received lots of support since joining AQA, with my professional development being enriched through taking part in diverse training initiatives, mentorship programmes, and having a supportive team around me. I also have structured feedback sessions and performance reviews which have played a pivotal role in shaping my growth trajectory.

For anyone considering an apprenticeship at AQA, my advice would be to embrace authenticity. It’s common for people to project an idealised version of themselves, but I’d recommend keeping calm, staying true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to inject some appropriate humour into your interactions with the teams!
