Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship with E.ON?
I decided to pursue an apprenticeship with E.ON because I was eager to earn a business-related degree while also gaining hands-on experience. The company's focus on sustainability and climate action strongly appealed to my values and interests. Additionally, the opportunity to engage in six-month placement rotations was a significant factor, as it allowed me to experience various aspects of the business. I learned about the apprenticeship programme from a link shared by someone from my church, and the idea of staying close to home instead of moving away for university was very appealing. Ultimately, I chose E.ON because I envisioned a long-term career there; everyone I met during the assessment centre day seemed genuinely happy and proud to be part of the company.
Describe your experience
My apprenticeship journey began with a placement in Asset Optimisation and Governance within the Business Improvement team. This was followed by an exciting role on the Diversity and Inclusion team, where I managed the sponsorship of Nottinghamshire Pride. My third placement had a health and safety focus, allowing me to complete my NEBOSH training. Currently, I am in the Community Energy Solutions Heat team, project managing a contract termination project. Throughout these placements, my responsibilities have steadily increased in complexity, continuously challenging me and enhancing my learning. A highlight of my experience has been the ability to integrate my project management degree studies with practical, real-world applications in my day-to-day roles.
What do you feel are the advantages of doing an apprenticeship over other training or education?
The hands-on experience gained through this apprenticeship has been invaluable, enabling me to determine what is applicable and realistic when applying university teachings in the real world. This practical knowledge sets me apart from full-time university students who may understand the theory but lack real-world application. Working with industry experts has significantly boosted my knowledge. E.ON assigned me a mentor, providing a resource to ask questions and work through any challenges. This mentorship, combined with the practical experience, has made my learning more robust and comprehensive compared to traditional educational routes.
How will your apprenticeship help you progress in your career?
E.ON's strong support for degree apprentices has significantly expanded my professional network, which will be immensely beneficial when seeking a permanent role within the business. Through the six-month rotation placements, I have had the opportunity to work with numerous colleagues across different departments, therefore increasing my network of people throughout the company. I am confident that the apprenticeship will propell my career forward as we are recognised as new and exciting talent within the organisation. I am confident that the skills, experiences, and networks gained during this apprenticeship will assist me in becoming an esteemed project manager in the industry.
