Callum Steele joined the Nestlé team in 2021, working through an apprenticeship towards a Level 3 Technical Operator. He is in the final year of his course and is looking ahead to a long and successful career with Nestlé.
Initially, when I found the role at Nestlé, I had finished my A-levels and had a gap year. During that time, I earned money working at a restaurant to pay my own way and found myself researching jobs in the area, rather than full-time education.
When I saw the roles Nestlé had to offer, I jumped at the chance to get on board. Working for a business with such well-known brands, I knew there was a chance to grow my own career from the ground up.
Building the skills that pay the bills
My time as an apprentice has had a massive impact on me in so many positive ways. I think a large part of that has been my involvement in team management. That ability to get involved and know that my voice is heard when it comes to decision-making has been incredibly rewarding.
An apprenticeship with Nestlé is a chance to grow your confidence and challenge yourself.
I feel like my own personal confidence has grown and I've been able to bring that to the rest of my role, suddenly progressing from education to real work where my decisions make a tangible impact across the day-to-day. I feel like people respect me.
More recently in the role, I was able to speak to school-age children about working at Nestlé and their school-leaving decisions. It was a moment that really resonated with me as I remember hearing about Nestlé at my own school career day talks, it felt like coming full circle and being able to make an impact on the next generation.
Making a tangible difference
For me, one of the proudest moments has been recognising an issue with some of our old processors. I worked with people across the business to identify and fix the issue and was able to put a working framework in place that meant that this kind of problem couldn't happen again. It felt extremely gratifying to see how much I had learnt and how integral I was becoming to the business.
It has been incredibly rewarding to see my training come to fruition in a way that can be applied practically and in a way that could have only been accomplished by working as a part of a wider team.
Why working with Nestlé is the right choice
An apprenticeship with Nestlé is a chance to grow your confidence and challenge yourself. It's somewhere that you can be yourself and can let your best qualities shine through.
Wherever you start in the company, there are great opportunities for progression and the people are friendly and really want you to progress. The factory might look big on the outside but there's a real community feel on the inside.
