Making a difference both in and out of Tax

Joining our Tax School and College Leaver programme in 2018, Jordan has jumped at the opportunity to make a difference both inside and outside of his tax role. Since starting his career at PwC, he’s successfully completed his ACA qualification and is now a Senior Associate in the Corporate Tax Compliance team. Here’s his story…

Tell us about your career and role at PwC?

I joined PwC at the age of 18 on the Tax School and College Leaver programme. Before applying I’d attended various PwC insight events where the genuine and engaging nature of the representatives really stood out to me. The transition into a professional environment after leaving school was challenging, but I’m so glad I took this route and began my journey with PwC as a school leaver. Since joining, my time management skills, focus and determination have all been put to the test as I’ve learnt to balance a full-time role, my personal life and studying for exams. Looking back on this, I’m so proud of myself for passing all of these hurdles.

I now work in the Corporate Tax Compliance team and prepare corporation tax returns for our clients. My client portfolio is really varied and I get to work with organisations across many industries, including retail, real estate and private equity. Day-to-day my role involves requesting data from clients, liaising with them on any queries, and then seeing this work through to submission. Technology continues to enhance how this work is carried out and this has been through the introduction of new tools such as mapping and dashboards. I enjoy exploring the possibility of new client offerings that are emerging through the use of these technologies and software. I’ve been given the opportunity to upskill in many of these areas too and have attended sessions on topics such as data and artificial intelligence (AI).

Outside of my core role, I sit on the Social Mobility team and Charity Committee in our Manchester office. We work on projects to support mobility across Manchester and recently have been focused on making work opportunities and experience more accessible to individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds. During the pandemic, the Social Mobility team formed a COVID-19 response programme in Manchester. We worked in partnership with the City Council to ensure that the most vulnerable in society were supported during the pandemic. Because of this work, the team won the ‘Make a Difference’ award at the PwC 2021 Awards. This is a moment I will forever be proud of and my biggest achievement at PwC so far. I find working in these areas incredibly rewarding and a great balance to my day to day role.

What do you enjoy most about working at PwC?

Hands down, one of the most enjoyable things about working at PwC is the people. I get the opportunity to work with people I’d describe as lovely and understanding, as well as experienced and insightful.

You’re given a lot of autonomy, flexibility and trust in your role at PwC, which is something I value. I feel in charge of my work schedule and pattern and I’ve created a career tailored to me and that fits around my other passions and life outside of the workplace. The firm has created an environment where you can have honest conversations about your work and routine and this can evolve depending on your needs at that time. I find this approach empowering and at PwC I feel cared about and supported.

Do you have any passions or hobbies outside of the workplace?

I spend most of my free time with my friends - we often spend time together cooking, listening to music or going to bars and gigs across Manchester. Manchester is a great place to work and live and there’s lots to explore. Sport is also a big part of my life - I’ve always played a lot of football and more recently I’ve been getting into climbing.
