Why did you choose to work at STFC?

I was really drawn to the type of work undertaken within STFC and being able to contribute towards genuinely interesting and worthwhile ideas – the scientific side of things is fascinating. I also wanted to be employed by an organisation where I felt I had security and opportunities for growth.

What are your responsibilities?

Overall, it’s varied and very hands on and practical. A lot of what I do is make 2D into 3D, which is what I really enjoy. The bulk of my job is to continue to progress and be able to independently manufacture a range of components whilst working towards more technician responsibilities. Currently, the components I manufacture are quite basic, but as I gain more experience they will range in greater complexity. The components are then put into use whether that be towards scientific projects or general site upgrades, again, as I progress, I will become more involved with the application of the components.

What is the best thing about being based at the UK Astronomy Technology Centre?

The UK Astronomy Technology Centre is on site at The Royal Observatory in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is a unique location in many aspects. While the site is compact, it makes for a more connected experience and there are often on-site events which allow you to meet and get to know people from other departments. I really like that the site is surrounded by greenery and a mixture of historical and modern architecture – I can’t imagine many workplaces that naturally offer lunchtime hill walks with city wide views.

What makes STFC a great place to work?

There are lots of STFC specific bonuses. The work is exciting, and as an employer, they are family friendly and offer work-life balance which is really important to me. STFC also provide opportunities to engage and educate employees through events to improve knowledge and understanding of the wider scientific aims, which helps contextualise what you’re working on.

What training have you received so far?

Initially, the first year of my apprenticeship was full-time at college which included a broad range of engineering related units such as milling and turning, CNC, electrical maintenance, mechanical device maintenance etc. Following from this, I have started the HNC in Engineering Systems which is the next level up and theoretical based. At work, I have been receiving continuous training and development where I work closely with those in my department to gain a range of machining experience and wider understanding.

Are you involved with any networks at STFC?

I have recently joined the WiSTEM (Women in STEM) network.
