Project Controls Degree Apprenticeship

About Project Controls

The bp Projects Organisation invests around $7 billion annually in 40-50 large-scale engineering and construction projects worldwide. Predictable execution and continuous improvement are crucial to bp’s sustainable project management.

If you're interested in working in a dynamic environment with high-performing teams on globally significant projects, a career in project controls could be for you. Project controls teams provide the vital information and analysis needed for efficient and competitive project delivery. They are responsible for estimating, planning & scheduling, cost forecasting, and control throughout the project lifecycle. These teams offer unique insights and assist the Project Management Team in making key decisions.

Early Careers Experience at bp

The degree apprenticeship program is 4 years long. You’ll work on various projects and learn daily operations while becoming a well-rounded professional. In addition to your apprenticeship, you’ll complete Ignite training to develop interpersonal skills.

There will be a strong support network, including a dedicated manager, colleagues, and the bp early careers program team. You’ll also have the opportunity to join the bp community through events and networking activities.

This apprenticeship leads to a Level 6 qualification and a BSc (Hons) Degree, aligned to the Project Controls Professional standard. London Metropolitan College is a possible training provider, though it may change.

Role and Responsibilities

By joining bp’s project controls community, you’ll develop skills in real-life roles that help ensure project targets are met and provide data to inform critical decisions by project leaders.

  • Applying tools, techniques, benchmarks, and measurements to plan and lead Major Projects
  • Developing the project controls strategy, plans, and procedures for bp and contractors
  • Analyzing and forecasting project data driving project performance
  • Building relationships with bp teams, external partners, and contractors
  • Working with engineering and construction contractors to review and analyze data

Apprentices will receive regular feedback on their progress and will be supported by a manager, mentor, and buddy. The program includes social activities and community engagement initiatives within bp and externally.

After Qualifying

Post-apprenticeship, bp employees typically change roles every 2-4 years according to performance and experience.

Requirements

Applicants should be motivated to add value to projects through personal effectiveness, relationship building, and communication skills. A keen eye for detail and a solutions-driven approach are essential, as is the ability to work well in a dynamic and diverse environment.

Strong numerical and analytical skills and an understanding of project controls’ contribution to bp’s overall agenda are crucial for success.
